Getting Your Test Results

Once we receive your test results, they will be reviewed by a GP. If there are any concerns or abnormalities, we will contact you within 14 days of the test being requested.

If the GP is unable to reach you, we will send a message asking you to call the practice to discuss your results and the reason for the call.

If your test results are normal, you will not hear from us. However, you will still be able to view your results, along with any comments made by the GP, through your NHS app or the NHS website.

You can requests a printed copy of your results from our Reception team after 14 days have passed since the test was completed.

If you have not been contacted but are still experiencing symptoms, please arrange another appointment with a GP.

Repeat Tests

If a GP asks you to have a repeat test, it is usually because:

  • The result was borderline or unclear, and the doctor wants another sample to monitor the situation or to re-check the results.
  • The result is abnormal, and the doctor cannot interpret the result without further tests and has asked you to come in for more tests.

Please do not worry if the GP has asked you for a repeat test. The GP will speak to you or request to see you directly if they need to discuss the results.

Test Results from Specialists or the Hospital

As your GP, we will only receive the results of tests that we have ordered. If a specialist has arranged a test for you, the results will be sent directly to them. You should contact the specialist’s team directly to obtain those results.

Once the specialist has reviewed the results and discussed them with you, they will send us confirmation of any health plan or actions we need to carry out, such as medication changes.

Test Results Turnaround Time

Some tests take longer than others to produce results. This is because of the process involved in producing results from images or samples taken and the requirement for these results to be reported on by a specialist before then being sent back to your GP.
